Threads: The Wild West of Social Media

*Disclaimer as social media changes often…

All of the insights I am sharing and basis for this podcast is based off of the the online landscape of Thread as of July 7th. Thread has only been a live app for like 3 days. Things are going to change, features added, adjustments made to the algorithm. The point of this podcast is to act as a resource to creative online entrepreneurs who are trying to get a vine for Thread without jumping straight in.

What is Threads?

  • a new app in the Metaverse

  • it is extremely similar to Twitter except instead of being created by politicians and journalists it seems like it’s roots are going to be the unhinged and burnt-out social media creators who are embracing the app like a breath of fresh air

  • all text, no filters, no hashtags or dm’s (for now), lots of gifs, and the ability to hold authentic conversations with your audience.

So what does this mean for me and my business?

Before we even get into it, I can already hear your exasperated sigh followed by something sound like “ Not another app I have to show up on and churn out content for I’m already swamped!” and I’m going to politely ask you to shut it and put a pin in it before you let that negative mindset color your experience.

  • I want you to treat Threads as a blank canvas. A fresh start. A “Knowing what you know now about your business presence on socials, how do you want to show up differently?”

  • And a lot of creators are choosing to throw their typical social media handbooks out the window, pour themselves a glass of wine, and start posting their most “unhinged” “feral” insights in their industry while also embracing their own personal cringe or weirdness.

  • If there is anything I have learned from the app over the past few days, it is that this current Threads environment is PRIME for creating authentic conversations with your audience and to let your personality SHINE. Who is the person behind the biz? How can I connect with the individual on a human level? What do we have in common?

  • My neurodivergent, multi-passionate, introverted girlies are going to thrive because there is no learning 30 second dances, being in front of the camera, posting polished canva templates expectations like with the other platforms. You have a thought? Write it up. Post it. Done.

  • Also important logistical detail: If you delete your Threads account, you delete your IG!

    • This is extremely important to know as I know we put a lot of time and energy into your Instagram accounts! But you can deactivate your threads account if you decide the app is not for you.

What should I post in Threads then?

  • Start conversational threads

    • When someone replies to your thread, it shows up on the feed of people who follow them. This is a FANTASTIC way to get new eyes on your content.

  • You can share multiple content forms

    • On threads you are able to share text (up to 500 characters), photos (up to 10 in a carousel), and videos (up to 5 minutes!)

  • This is the moment your witty, neurodivergent self has been waiting to shine!

    • Get cheeky, embrace your cringe, share the niche meme’s that make you laugh to loud, use gif’s, post your favorite coffee order - it truly can be as random or out there as you are vibing as long as it feels relevant to YOU and connects to the humans in your audience.

    • If you have been suffering from over-curated content then this is the breath of fresh air your business is craving. No planning, no perfection, just a beautiful playground of inspired action.

But over everything else, remember this:

Threads is an extension of Instagram, not a replacement. If you haven’t gotten a handle on how to build community, curate engaging content, or develop a system to convert followers into leads on Instagram then there will be no miraculous change of results on Threads.
